The Archivio Apostolico Vaticano is in the Vatican City State. Access is through Porta Sant’Anna
in via di Porta Angelica.

Access to the Vatican City State

A pass is required to access the Vatican City State and can be obtained from the Ufficio Permessi at Porta Sant’Anna. Passes are provided on receipt of valid ID (identity card or passport).

Public transport

Bus
23, 271, 971: alight at piazza Risorgimento, 5-minute walk to Porta Sant’Anna.
62: alight at via dei Corridori, 5-minute walk to Porta Sant’Anna.
40 express (terminus Roma Termini): alight at piazza Pia-Castel S. Angelo, 8 to 10-minute walk to Porta Sant’Anna.

Underground
Linea A: the nearest underground station is Ottaviano-San Pietro, 8 to 10-minute walk to Porta Sant’Anna.

Train
FR5 (Roma Termini-Maccarese Fregene): the nearest overground railway station is San Pietro. From piazza della Stazione di San Pietro walk along via delle Fornaci, piazza del Sant’Uffizio, via Paolo VI, Largo degli Alicorni, piazza Pio XII, Largo del Colonnato, via di Porta Angelica (15-minute walk). Or take bus 64 and alight at via delle Fornaci, walk through the Sottopasso Principe Amedeo Savoia Aosta, cross piazza del Sant’Uffizio, and continue along via Paolo VI, Largo degli Alicorni, piazza Pio XII, Largo del Colonnato, via di Porta Angelica.

Private transport

Bicycle
The Vatican City State can be reached via the Dorsale Tevere cycle route. Exit at Ponte Sant’Angelo and cycle along via della Conciliazione, or exit at Ponte Vittorio Emanuele II and cycle along via San Pio X.

Car
Vehicular access to the Vatican City State is not granted to scholars visiting the Archivio Apostolico Vaticano.
